How to Win at Lightning Calc

Lightning Calc is rapid-fire mental math — solve each problem quicker than your opponent to win. A handful of arithmetic shortcuts will make you dramatically faster than someone doing it “the school way.”

Add from the left, not the right

School taught you to add the ones column first and carry. For speed, do the opposite: add the big digits first. For 47 + 38, think “40 + 30 = 70, then 7 + 8 = 15, so 85.” You start saying the answer sooner and you’re less likely to lose track under pressure.

Use complements to ten

Round to the nearest ten and adjust. 68 + 7 becomes “70 + 5 = 75.” 9 × anything is “ten times it, minus one of it” — so 9 × 7 = 70 − 7 = 63. These shortcuts turn hard problems into easy ones.

Trust your first read

Multiplication drill: know your times tables up to 12 cold. Any hesitation on a basic fact is dead time your opponent is using to answer. This is the single highest-value thing to practice.

Warm up your numbers

Mental math is a warm-up sport just like reaction games. Run a few free rounds to get your recall firing before you compete for tokens — the first problems always feel slower than the tenth.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the fastest way to add two-digit numbers?

Add left to right — tens first, then ones. You begin forming the answer sooner and make fewer carry errors than the traditional right-to-left method.

Do I need to memorize anything?

Your times tables to 12. Instant recall on basic multiplication is the biggest speed advantage in Lightning Calc.

Is a calculator allowed?

No — it’s a mental-math skill game. Everyone competes on the same footing, which is exactly why practicing shortcuts pays off.
