How Challenge Alerts Work (and How to Turn Them On)

Alerts are opt-in push notifications that ping you when a friend challenges you or your Pit challenge gets taken — even when the app is closed. Here’s how to switch them on.

What alerts notify you about

Alerts are opt-in and per-device — you’re fully in control, and you can turn them off any time from your Account.

Turning alerts on

Open your Account and tap the Alerts toggle — it reads 🔔 Alerts On / 🔕 Alerts Off. Your browser or phone asks permission once; allow it, and you’re set on that device.

iPhone: install to your Home Screen first 🍏

On iPhone, web push only works once VS Compete is installed as an app. Tap the Share button in Safari, choose Add to Home Screen, then reopen VS Compete from that new icon and turn alerts on there. (It’s an Apple requirement for all web apps, not just ours.)

Bonus: installing VS Compete to your home screen (Android or iPhone) grants a one-time +20🪙 — and makes the whole app faster and full-screen.

Why it’s worth it

The whole point of async modes like The Pit is that you don’t have to be online at the same time. Alerts close that loop — post a challenge, go about your day, and get pinged the moment someone takes it. Without alerts you’re checking manually; with them, the game comes to you.

Frequently asked questions

Are alerts required to play?

No — they’re opt-in. But they make async modes like The Pit and Friendly Duels far more convenient.

Why don’t I get alerts on my iPhone?

iPhone only allows web push after you Add VS Compete to your Home Screen and reopen it from there. It’s an Apple rule for all web apps.

Can I turn alerts off?

Yes, any time — the Alerts toggle in your Account is per-device, so you stay in control.
